A wheelie lovely story

Please read the following update from one of our physiotherapist volunteers who visited Hoima for the first time this year...

On the Hoima trip back in January, I was able to go out to one of the fishing villages (Tonya) with the OT and Physio, and we assessed many children with disabilities, including two boys with paraplegia. They also had contractures and muscle wasting. They came out to us crawling along the ground as they had no wheelchairs, and so were unable to get to school. They were 14 and 9 years old. I arranged for one of the boys to have some knee protector pads made for him, as he had terribly swollen knees from the crawling- and these were made for him at the hospital. When I came home, I had these 2 boys on my mind and so contacted some charities I knew of, and asked around to see if we could get wheelchairs for them. Through a contact, I was put in touch with a wonderful charity called the Walkabout Foundation- and they said that if we sent through as much detail as we could about the boys, they may be able to provide "all terrain" chairs for them, that would be transported from their base in Kenya.

Recently the OT I worked with there, Juma, delivered the 2 wheelchairs to these boys- I was so happy, I cried!! The photo is of them in their new wheelchairs. Hopefully this will be life-changing for them.
